I am a child of God, follower/disciple of Jesus, husband to Kristen, son/brother, uncle to Kristen and my nine nephews and nieces, friend, MCC2 Church worker at/with Christ Austin, artist, and volunteer baseball coach/ambassador.
My mom and dad provided my brother and me enriching opportunities to grow in the faith, and to grow as people in the estates of family, church, and state, during the 18 years respectively that my brother Jacob and I grew up in the core of the city of Houston and worshipped (and attended classes) Sunday after Sunday at Trinity Downtown Houston.
I have a Master of Arts in Systematic Theology, 2011 from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO. I am a Concordia University, Austin, TX graduate with a - Post Baccalaureate Certification in Director of Christian Education. I graduated from Concordia University, Mequon, WI - Bachelor of Arts, Lutheran Secondary Education - Theology & Biology
I am currently the Minister of Creative Communication and Community Connections at Christ Austin 78704 (as a Commissioned Minister in the LCMS). I have been mentored by Rev. John C. Stennfeld and have served with him at Christ Austin for the last 17.5 years.
Kristen and I married on April 18, 2021 when I was 40 years old. Kristen is very encouraging and supportive to me in life and ministry (especially from a visual arts standpoint).
Adventures that Kristen and I enjoy sharing together that inspire creativity are walking around and learning things in antique/vintage stores/shops, going to movies and bookstores, watching shows about restoring homes like HomeTown on Discovery+, and taking walks and hikes in Texas and like we did in Arizona (Sedona and the Grand Canyon) just prior to 2025 Best Practices.
Visual Arts as an Avenue for Connecting People to Jesus
At Christ Austin 78704, we are a 77 year old congregation that is nestled in an eclectic neighborhood where a number of professional artists work from their home studios. We are located two blocks from a bustling arts and entertainment district and within walking distance from some of Austin’s (and America's) most iconic wall art.
Over the last 17 years at CLC, we have leveraged the visual arts (especially paintings) in many ways toward creatively communicating the Biblical narrative, and toward meeting felt needs and developing relational equity with our community. My church continues to highly emphasize Loving Service and to be hyper focused on Community Connections in our local context (https://www.christaustin.org/serve-with-us). We go on ‘offense,’ ‘defense,’ and ‘special teams’ for the sake of the Gospel, and being the Church.
We created an art gallery spanning Scripture from Genesis to Revelation in our annex house where various 12 step programs have met.
Driven by the creative nature/heart of God, we wrote and produced in-house a decade of Christmas programs.
Motivated by the Lord's mission to advance His Kingdom, we have hosted visual art camps, decorative pumpkin patches, and art-related non-profits.
Take a look at just a few pieces of visual artistry with descriptions below!
From left to right:
Images 1 & 2: For Good Friday and Easter Sunday 2012, I painted two canvases to portray the contrast between those two Worship services in mood, message, and music, and to express how the death and resurrection of Jesus is central/crucial to the one true faith. Those paintings are still hanging in the hallway between my Pastor's office and my office.
Image 3: In 2015, I created a collage of St Nick (Santa Claus) utilizing Christmas cards (and Mod Podge) for a children's Christmas program that people at Christ and my family had brought in after Christmases in 2013 & 2014.
Images 4 & 5: In 2015 and 2016, I painted a mural in our Youth Room of The Story of The Bible in 50 Words (of which credit for the words goes to my Pastor), and I painted murals in our Nursery (including the God is Good and Days of Creation backdrop image) to creatively communicate God's Word with "little ones" and their families.
Image 6: From a personal standpoint in the community, I was able to paint two live progressive-over-several-days during two Mission Weeks that my friend Landon Becker catalyzed and coordinated with he served as a DCE locally at/with Bethany Austin.
Image 7: In 2024, I painted a mural for the SoCo Pumpkin Patch. For the 2023 pumpkin patch, I repurposed a painting of a Christmas tree farm (from 2017) into a pumpkin patch scene. My church continues to highly emphasize Loving Service and to be hyper focused on Community Connections in our local context
The creative process draws me closer to Jesus as we await that great and glorious day of His return. I enjoy creatively communicating and making the Bible come alive through the visual arts, to tell the story of Jesus and his love. Painting murals that pertain to the works, words, ways, and will of Jesus have also helped me deal with my anxiety, and find peace, solace, strength, and courage from the Lord in some dark times of despair.
The visual arts are an avenue for me toward connecting people to Jesus (and to bringing people the hope, joy, peace, and love of Jesus in a broken fallen sinful world). It's quite the journey to be able to start with a "canvas" (whether that is a store bought stretched/stapled canvas, drywall wall, painter's drop cloth canvas tarp, masonite, or foam insulation board) and then render/see a tangible product at the end. I pray that the artwork that I create (or team up to create) blesses people, helps people know Jesus more (or for the first time), and inspires people to create artwork that reflects the creativity of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and that makes others smile and the world a better/more bearable place (this side of eternity).
